Arkansas Baseball Portraits

I spent about an hour Wednesday afternoon shooting portraits of a few of Arkansas’ baseball players for future stories during the team’s media day. Since it was rainy and overcast, I couldn’t do any of the portraits on the field. Instead, I decided to just shoot them all uniformally on the same backdrop, which really simplified things for me — I have a tendancy to over complicate portrait shoots. I limited myself on the vertical framing by using a rollaway door to one of Baum Stadium’s concession stands as a backdrop. I had used the exact same location as a backdrop a couple of weeks earlier for a Hawgs Illustrated portrait shoot and really liked the look of the reflective silver surface and its horizontal lines. I used two lights, a main light with a grided softbox and a background light with a grid spot. I also had a large silver reflector on the opposite side of the players to bounce back my main light to fill in their shadow side. In all a simple setup with very nice results.
