Denny’s Free Breakfast Giveaway

Are you hungry? How about a free breakfast? Well 900 NWA residents had their bellies filled for free Tuesday at the Denny’s on Southeast Walton Boulevard in Bentonville. The national restaurant chain debuted the promotion in a commercial on Sunday during the Super Bowl. The deal was a free Grand Slam Breakfast, a $5.99 value that included eggs, bacon, sausage and pancakes, at any Denny’s location across the country from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday only.

When I arrived at the restaurant around 11:00 a.m. there was a line of at least 20 people filed out the front door and nearly turned the corner around the building. It was about 35 degrees at that point and the average wait in line for a table was 20 minutes. Talk about dedication for a free meal.

Denny’s manager Ben Northcut confirmed after the promotion finished at 2 p.m. that his crew served 900 breakfasts that totaled $7,800 in free food. “It’s been busier than I though it would be,” Northcut said when I arrived at 11:00 a.m. The entire crew was pretty much overwhelmed from the start. Ron Danks, Denny’s head cook, said by 11:30 a.m. he had prepared at least 1,000 pancakes and had gone through eight cases of batter in the process. Needless to say the man wasn’t exactly smiling. I shot my photos as fast as I could and got out of the kitchen staff’s way before I wore out my welcome.

In case any of you were wondering, no I didn’t take advantage of the free grub. Are you kidding? I wasn’t going to stand in the cold for 30 minutes for breakfast. Besides, I had my bacon and eggs before I left the house this morning.
